Notable spots
Chalkida, the capital town of Evia, is another ideal getaway from Athens. After only an hour’s drive, take a coffee break by the seafront while enjoying the view of Evripos straits.
Visit the town’s Archaeological and Folk Art Museum as well as the Red House, a neoclassical building with four clay statues on its top and the Town Hall, known for its harmonious architecture.
The Roman Aqueduct and the Emir Zade Turkish Mosque are definitely worth a look too.
Limni is undoubtedly the most picturesque village in North Evia. The area has a unique natural style that makes Limni resemble an Aegean island. The beautiful narrow streets with the green nature and beautiful traditional houses and mansions wins over the hearts of thousands of visitors who come here for their holidays.
Limni is built close to the ancient city of "Elymnio" (thus taking the name Limni), where, according to mythology, the marriage of Zeus and Hera took place. The area, because of its marine character, showed great prosperity during the Roman and Byzantine era and suffered many raids from pirates and other invaders.
Most of the inhabitants of the lake are of Aegean origin, as several captains of the Aegean were transferred to the area in the 16th century. The heart of Limni beats at its coastal area, where tourists and locals meet to enjoy their coffee or food, overlooking the Euboean Bay and the lush slope of the city.
Edipsos is one of the most famous cities of Evia. Edipsos is famous since antiquity for its natural thermal springs with healing properties.
The thermal springs of Edipsos, were the ultimate accolade of being patronised by Hercules, who came here to soothe his strapping limbs between heroic pursuits. Aristotle and Plutarch wrote about Edipsos, and regarded the thermal waters there as the most powerful known to man. Today, scientists acknowledge them as packing the strongest cocktail of minerals to ease physical complaints such as arthritis, rheumatism, skin problems and even gynaecological disorders.
